The siamese twins with the medical team
Medical personnel at the Ejura Government Hospital in the Ashanti Region made history on Friday when they successfully performed surgery to enable a woman give birth to female Siamese twins.
News of the delivery of the Siamese twins reportedly caused a stir in the hospital and Ejura, as superstitious people gave varied interpretations.
The twins, who are tied together at the abdomen area, as well as their mother, are still on admission at the hospital awaiting the next action by the authorities.
The Medical Superintendent of the Ejura Government Hospital, Dr. Manye A.D. Mensah, told DAILY GUIDE that a complex surgical operation was required to separate the Siamese twins.
According to him, medical practitioners would require sophisticated equipment to separate the twins, adding that the conjoined twins would be referred to a tertiary health institution in the country.
“The mother and twins are doing very well and we will refer them to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for a surgery to separate them.
“Hopefully, latest by Tuesday, they would be at KATH where officials would assess them and conduct surgery to separate them,” he told the paper.
Dr. Mensah said, “The mother’s delivery was not smooth and I realized that they were conjoined twins so I performed Cesarean Section to remove them.”
According to him, he advised the parents of the twins not to attach superstition to the development.
He expressed optimism that the Siamese twins would be separated by doctors at the medical facility, saying “One of the twins has teeth in her mouth and that is normal. The teeth will go away for new ones to develop.”
