Akua Donkor
The leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, has taken President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to the Supreme Court for their alleged involvement in acts of corruption captured in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ latest investigative piece on corruption in Ghana football.
Akua Donkor, who was disqualified from contesting in the 2016 Presidential election, in her writ, prayed the apex court to order the President and his Vice to step down since their names were mentioned by Kwesi Nyantakyi, former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in the video.
This, she averred, is to enable the relevant bodies to investigate the allegations made in the video without hindrance.
Video
Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ latest investigative piece, #12 was premiered at the Accra International Conference Centre early this month, with thousands of Ghanaians from all walks of life trooping to watch the damning video, which unravels acts of corruption in Ghana’s football.
The investigative piece, which has caught former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi in the web, covers the 2018 Commonwealth games, 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, GFA, the Ghana FA Cup, as well the Women’s League.
The work, which initially focused on football matters in the country, eventually diverted to political and investment matters, as the former GFA boss tried to convince the ‘investors’ that he could influence the business community in the country.
He discussed a certain $12 million deal with his ‘investors,’ who unknown to him were from the Tiger Eye PI – and that was how the name of the President, his Vice and some government officials came in.
“I know that the Chinese money is coming. It is about $2 billion. I have spoken to Anthony Karbo. He has assured me that even though the Chinese will be doing the construction of the bridges in the northern part of Ghana, the stones and chippings alone can bring about $100 million. So Anthony Karbo wants us to establish a Ghanaian company. Anthony Karbo also advised that we must make Ken Agyapong a shareholder,” Mr. Nyantakyi proposed.
“You wanted to know how I will receive the money and transmit it to the President. I have a microfinance company so you can move the entire $12 million through it. Like I indicated, I will share the money by giving $5 million to the President, $3 million to the Vice President. The Highways Minister will get $2 million, my boy, Anthony Karbo will take $1 million, myself and Abu will share the $1 million. I will settle Assenso Boakye. I will arrange a private meeting between you and the President,” the former GFA boss suggested.
Statement of claims
Madam Akua Donkor, who went silent after the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which she supported after her disqualification lost the 2016 election, claimed the President and his Vice are culpable.
She averred that Mr. Nyantakyi, in the video, detailed how the Chinese investors, for instance, invested in Ghana through the payment of bribes to key government officials.
For this reason, Madam Akua Donkor averred that President Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr. Bawumia were involved in the deal.
She also stated that the President, who has always believed in the work of Anas, fired some customs officials and judges who were exposed.
Claims
Madam Akua Donkor is, therefore, asking the Supreme Court to order the Attorney General, who is the official advisor of government, to advise the President and his Vice to step down from the highest office in the land since their names were mentioned in the video.
She is also asking for a cost.
Legal Representation
In what seems like a popularity stunt to relaunch herself after the 2016 elections, Madam Akua Donkor will be representing herself at the Supreme Court after the Attorney General enters appearance.
On the writ that was served on the AG, she thump-printed the portion where lawyers usually sign.
