Gov’t Names School After Amissah-Arthur

The Moree Senior High School (SHS) in the Abura-Aseibu Kwamankese District of the Central Region has been named after the late Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, former Vice President, who was laid to rest at the Military Cemetery at Burma Camp in Accra yesterday.

“Upon consultation with his family, His Excellency the President and government have decided to rename Moree Senior High School to Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur Senior High School in memory of the late Vice President,” Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said yesterday.

Dr. Bawumia made the disclosure at the funeral ceremony of the former vice president at the Accra International Conference Centre, yesterday.

It was a very solemn but colourful ceremony, as personnel from the Ghana Army and Police Service displayed spectacular drills to bid the former statesman farewell.

The coffin of the late Amissah-Arthur, which was draped with the Ghana flag, was placed on a military gun carriage vehicle closely followed by a black Cadillac hearse, which was escorted by the military and police personnel.

Scores of people, largely women, wept uncontrollably.

Preceding the interment of the former Vice President was a burial service held at the auditorium of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), which started at 8am.

The ceremony was attended by scores of dignitaries, comprising politicians, members of the judiciary, religious leaders and celebrities from the entertainment industry and many more.

A memorial service in his honour is expected to be held at the Calvary Methodist Church, Adabraka in Accra on Sunday, July 29 from 7am to 9am.

Amissah-Arthur, 67, died on Friday, June 29 after he collapsed at the Air Force Gym in Accra during an early morning workout session.
