DCOP Kwame Tachie-Poku, BA Regional Police boss

THE POLICE at Sankore in the Asunafo South District of the Brong Ahafo Region were attacked by hooligans as they attempted to arrest a criminal, Kwaku Mankuji.

The attack led to two officers including a service driver sustaining various degrees of injury, but the three persons have been treated and discharged.

However, Kwaku Mankuji who was shot is receiving treatment at the hospital according to Brong Ahafo Regional Police Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Nana Kwaku Duah, who spoke to the press in Sunyani.

Explaining the circumstances that led to the attack on his men, he said they were trying to arrest Mankuji who had been on the ‘wanted list’ of the police. He was spotted and swiftly arrested by the police and in the course of transporting him to cells at the police station at Sankore, members of his gang attacked the police van and invaded the police station. They wanted the police to set Mankuji free but their attempt proved futile.

He explained further: “The hooligans invaded the police station. They threatened to kill our men.  In the process, two of our officers including a service driver sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital where they were treated and discharged. However, the suspect is still in police custody receiving treatment at the hospital.”

Cell Break

In a related development, three inmates at the Nsuta police cells near Techiman have absconded from police cells whilst the fourth escapee, Abdulai Raman Osmani, 27, died through shooting as he also attempted to escape last Saturday morning.

According to Nana Kwaku Duah, the four deceived the officer in charge and escaped. The fourth person,   Abdulai Raman Osmani, wanted to run away with the three but was shot and killed by the police; the others managed to run away.  He said the incident happened last Saturday at about 8:10am.

He said the officer on duty had been given 10 days as part of service rules to look for ‘jail birds’ or face punishment.
