Gov’t Declares War On Landlords

Freda Prempeh speaking at the launch of Kujos Home Maintenance

DEPUTY MINISTER for Works and Housing, Freda Prempeh, has tasked all prospective tenants in Ghana to report landlords, who demand more than 12 months of rent advance, to the police.

Madam Prempeh made the call recently whilst delivering a speech at the launch of Kujos Home Maintenance at Dansoman, a suburb of Accra.

According to her, a new Rent Bill will soon be presented to Parliament and when passed into an Act, it will ensure that sanity prevails in the housing industry where landlords have reportedly resorted to charging exorbitant fees, much to the detriment of low-income earners.

The Tano North Member of Parliament stressed that the ministry was committed to cracking the whip on defaulters of rent laws in Ghana, adding that the onus lies on prospective tenants to report unauthorized rent charges.

She did indicate that the ministry was in the process of amending the Building Regulations LII630 of 1996 to reflect the revised Building Code, but securing funds to pay for consultancy fees, cost of workshops and related matters has been the main challenge.

On the issue of the Condominium Bill, she stated that the Ghana Housing Finance Association, in collaboration with the Works and Housing Ministry, has had the Condominium Law passed.

Meanwhile, she commended the Kujos Home Maintenance for the initiative that would provide every individual the skills to set up their own companies and enterprises, and even a source of employment for the teeming youth.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of Kujos Home Investment, Jospeh Martey, explained that since its establishment, Kujos Home Maintenance has built its reputation on high technology in design and execution, and had successfully implemented several projects in Ghana during the last decade.

Kujos Home Maintenance is an agency that undertakes all commercial and residential works in property renovations.
