Mahama ‘Campaign’ Road Destroyed

The road leading to Asokore Mampong in a deplorable state just two years after construction

THE ROAD from Sawaba to Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region is in a deplorable state.

It was constructed less than two years ago during the latter parts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, led by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Contractors were seen working on the busy road day and night, especially few days to the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Election observers then accused the NDC administration of being desperate to retain political power, hence the construction of the road in a speedy manner to win votes.

Several road engineers even warned that a shoddy work would be delivered by the contractor, considering the ‘lightning speed’ at which the work was being done.

And true to their predictions, the road project started to deteriorate few weeks after the 2016 election, which the NDC lost.

Sadly, the recent heavy rains experienced in the Ashanti Region have further exposed the shoddy work executed by the contractor.

At the moment, virtually all the asphalt on the road is rapidly being washed away and it has created dangerous potholes all over the busy road.

Daily Guide’s Visit

During DAILY GUIDE’s visit to the place on Friday, drivers were seen taking their time to carefully dodge the dangerous potholes with their vehicles.

Most of the drivers, whom the paper talked to, hurled unprintable words at the NDC administration and the contractor for doing a bad job.

“The NDC are wicked people, they just did a shoddy work just to get votes within the Asawase constituency, which is their stronghold.

Even a day before the 2016 election, contractors were busily working on several road projects within the Asawase constituency and they did a bad job here. I am not surprised that the rains have clearly exposed the NDC and that of the contractor’s wickedness”, Baba Alhassan, a driver, told DAILY GUIDE in a chat.

Asokore Mampong MCE

Meanwhile, the MCE for Asokore Mampong, Alidu Seidu, has also condemned the shoddy work executed by the contractor, saying “the NDC rushed to construct the road because of votes and so the road started to deteriorate few weeks after the contractor had completed the construction”.

The MCE disclosed that he recently ordered for the contractor to come back to site and fix the alarming defects on the road since a shoddy work was done there.

“He came back to site as I requested but he could not fix the defects properly”, he said, adding that the contractor would fix the rot.

According to the MCE, the contractor is supposed to hand over to the Ashanti Regional Urban Roads Department on Wednesday for them to also inspect the road project before he will be ordered to go back to site and fix all the defects once again.
