KNUST Crisis Meeting At Manhyia Cancelled

Otumfuo Osei Tutu

A crisis meeting summoned by the Bantamahene Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia to address the recent riot by irate students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi was called off at the last minute yesterday.

The crunch meeting was cancelled at the eleventh-hour due to unexplained reasons.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the Chancellor of the KNUST, is currently on a foreign trip.

The Bantamahene, who represented the Asantehene, summoned the crisis meeting at the Manhyia Palace after he had led some chiefs to assess the extent of damage to properties on campus on Tuesday morning.

Chiefs have special roles to play to help restore law and order to the university so that students can return to campus and continue with their academic work in peace, according to the Bantamahene.

After the trip to KNUST on Tuesday, he summoned the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso, and his management team and Students Representatives Council (SRC) to the meeting at the palace to find a lasting solution to the problems before the Chancellor, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, returns to the country.

Journalists who stormed the Manhyia Palace expressed disappointment at the last-minute cancellation of the meeting.

The Asante Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, the occupant of the Silver Stool of Asanteman, also visited KNUST on Tuesday to obtain firsthand information about the incident.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu, a former Registrar of KNUST, during his visit, called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to help restore normalcy in the school.
