Students preparing beds for carrot production
THE AGRICULTURAL Department of the Sunyani Technical University in the Brong Ahafo Region has embarked on growing vegetables and also engaged in poultry to support government’s programme – Planting for Food and Jobs.
One hundred (100) students of the department have been selected to embark on the project as part of their academic work and also to raise funds for the department. Besides, the initiative will prepare the students for the job market after their tertiary education.
Speaking with DAILY GUIDE, the supervisor of the project, Solomon Addo, said the population of the country is growing and also there is scarcity of food in the country. This situation compelled government to introduce the Planting for Food and Jobs programme to reduce unemployment.
“We as a department will do everything within our capacity to support our students to fit into the job market through the knowledge and skills they learn from lecturers. It will also help government’s agenda of Planting for Food and Jobs,” he added.
The head of department, K.A. Duodu, said “the enthusiasm in the students is great and they are ready to work hard to achieve the objective of growing many vegetables for the market.
He bemoaned the lack of support from cooperate entities and government by way of encouraging young people to go into agriculture as a business.
“I am using this opportunity to appeal to the Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, to come to the aid of the department . . .” he pleaded.
