The Police Officer, General Corporal Lawrence Partey lying in pain
A Bolgatanga Magistrate Court presided over by Osman Abdul-Hackeem has granted bail to a man who allegedly assaulted a police officer on duty in Bolgatanga with two sureties and an amount of GH¢10,000.
The suspect, Jonathan Atua, is expected to re-appear in court on November 14, 2018, after he has spent a total of two weeks on remand in prison custody.
Jonathan Atua is standing trial at the Bolgatanga Magistrate Court for allegedly beating up a police officer, General Corporal Lawrence Partey, who is with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
The suspect was arrested the same day the incident occurred after a report had been made against him on Sunday, October 21. He was granted police inquiry bail.
Before he was granted bail on October 29, he had been on remand since October 25.
He has been charged with the offense of causing harm to a public officer, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Even though Jonathan Atua, has been remorseful ever since he was arrested and remanded, it’s not clear if he will get the opportunity to get an out of court.
Meanwhile, the Bolgatanga Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Samuel Punobyin has cleared the air, saying the police officer who was reported to have been assaulted by the suspect was still alive and responding to treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
According to him, the police officer is alive and not true that he has passed on after the incident.
He said the officer was treated and discharged from the Bolgatanga Hospital and when his health condition failed to get better, he was transferred to the TTH for special attention.
