6 Killed In Gomoa Deadly Crash

The mangled Sprinter bus, The Toyota Corolla, the bloody scene from the crash

Six people have been confirmed dead and additional 14 injured in an accident that occurred at Gomoa Mpota Junction, along the Winneba Road in the Central Region.

The accident, which occurred on Sunday night, November 4, involved a Sprinter Mercedes Benz bus with registration number GT 3389-17 and a Toyota Corolla registered CR 416-17.

Both vehicles, according to eyewitnesses, collided at Gomoa Mpota Junction after the Sprinter Bus, which was reportedly heading towards Accra, had a tyre burst.

One of the accident victims, Yaa Amponsah, in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, said she was on board the Sprinter Bus, which was traveling from Cape Coast to Accra.

According to her, when they reached Mpota, their driver in an attempt to overtake a car lost control of the vehicle when one of the tyres got burst and the bus collided with the Toyota Corolla Saloon car, which was coming from the opposite direction.

The driver of the Toyota saloon car, who sensed danger, tried to avoid a head on collision but the car somersaulted three times and landed on top of the Sprinter bus.

Luckily, both drivers survived the gory crash that caused traffic jam for over two hours on the Winneba-Junction/ Kasoa Highway.

It took some time for personnel from Winneba Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service to remove the Toyota saloon car on the top of the Sprinter bus and got both the injured and the dead out of the cars.

Medical Superintendent of the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Dr. Douglas Amponsah, said many people who survived, including a three-year old boy, were in a critical condition.

The boy’s parents, as at the time of filing this report, were yet to be identified, according to the doctor.

He stated that “the boy’s parents are nowhere to be found, and a Good Samaritan brought him here.”

The boy, DAILY GUIDE gathered, sustained head injuries, but unfortunately, there was no ambulance to transport him to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for emergency medical attention.

Dr. Amponsah told journalists that calls to the National Ambulance Service were not answered.

The crash comes a day after the Deputy Minister of Communications and Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya West, George Andah, had accident in the same region.

Meanwhile, the Effutu Municipal Station Fire Officer, S.O.1, Daniel Idan, who was at the scene of the crash, said passengers onboard the Sprinter bus were 33 in number while those in the Toyota Corolla Saloon Car were two.

According to him, “The reason why the number is 33 is that there were children onboard.”
