X’mas Traffic Hits K’si

Some cars stuck in traffic in Kumasi

THERE IS massive vehicular and human traffic on the streets of Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti Region.

The unusual congestion on the road is particularly visible at Adum, the Central Business District (CBD). The roads in the centre of the city are virtually choked, preventing an easy passage of vehicles and people.

The unpleasant situation started on Monday and most of the residents of the city have attributed it to the forthcoming Christmas, which is around the corner.

They said shopping for the yuletide has, surprisingly, started very early this year, hence the congestion on the roads.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that a journey, which normally would take 10 minutes, now takes more than an hour to cover by cars.

It was also gathered that shoppers in the city centre are finding it extremely difficult to even take a step to their destinations. The human congestion was also said to be visible at the Central Market and around the Kejetia Market, which is currently under construction.

Meanwhile, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken steps to prevent congestion in the city. The assembly has quickly opened some roads that have remained closed for about one-year due to the Kejetia project.

They are Kejetia to Dr. Mensah, Pampaso to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Roundabout and Kejetia to Suame Roundabout.

Godwin Okumah Nyame, the KMA PRO, urged motorists to drive with care and urged hawkers to leave the streets in their own interest. He said even though the Kejetia project is not officially opened, the roads were opened to avert congestion in the city ahead of Christmas.
