Yibor Kojo Yibor
An exhibition of installations, paintings and drawings by Yibor Kojo Yibor which seek to explore the notion of self-examination will open today at the Goethe-Institut in Accra.
Titled ‘With.Out-With.In’, it considers the context of ‘Me’ and ‘I’ with the suggestion that they could be two separate organisms, as well as one and the same.
Indeed, the works are juxtaposed with a myriad of other things in life while reference is made to others, who he refers to as ‘You’, ‘They’ and ‘Them’.
Yibor believes humans don’t only exist ‘her’ on earth in the physical but also ‘there’ in the spiritual.
Consequently, the artist through this exhibition attempts to question ‘what is’ or ‘what is not’, ‘silence or sound’, ‘lightness or darkness’, ‘presence or absence’ we experience in our private or public lives.
The works are micro stories that are laden with potential – somewhere between ‘ambiguous’ and ‘unambiguous’.
He, therefore, enjoins the public to assist him in posing this question – “what ignites the action between the object and the subject in the space of performance?”
Also known as Sir Black, he works cut across painting, sculpture, installation and spoken word. Using text, sounds, images and objects, he is interested in exploring the notion of self-examination within three dimensions – ‘then’, ‘now’ and ‘after’.
Yibor, whose performances are characterised by the use of his body as an object and the ticking of time as a subject, has performed in diverse African and European countries. Kofi Setordji, a renowned Ghanaian sculptor and director of ZenHaus, will open the exhibition.
