Be Good Communicators – Kabral

A former chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Kabral Blay-Amihere, has tasked upcoming communicators to focus on building good names.

Speaking at the 4th congregation of the School of Graduate Studies and Research at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) on Friday, Mr Blay-Amihere, who was the guest speaker, urged the graduates not to yield to corrupt practices.

He indicated that though academic qualifications are important in society, sense of responsibility and the spirit of sacrifice were crucial in igniting the zeal to serve society.

The ceremony was themed: “Promoting Development through Graduate Education in Media and Communication.”

About 208 students were awarded Masters of Art (MA) Degrees after completing a 15–month graduate programme in four main disciplines.

There were made up of eight students who obtained MA in Journalism, 93 students for MA in Public Relations, 87 for MA in Development Communication while 20 students had MA in Media Management.

The Rector of the Institute, Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, said that the institution would improve its technological and academic capacity in order to provide quality education and facilities that would meet the demands of the modern digital age and a complex media landscape.

He, therefore, called on stakeholders to support GIJ’s initiatives such as the Digital Media Hub Project and Endowment Fund geared to achieve its objectives.

He also hinted of plans by the institution to improve admission requirements in order to attract strong talents and produce the best communication graduates.

Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh, entreated graduates to be fact seekers and go the extra mile to reveal the truth.

 “I challenge you to continually scrutinise the assumptions that underlie you life and your practice,” he added.

Students, who were recognised for their outstanding academic performance, included Priscilla Anutuah Apolala, who was adjudged the Best Student in Public Relations and Theodore Elikplim Dzineku, the Best Student in Journalism.

The rest were Prosper Kofi Senyo, Best Student in Development Communication and Eugene Akyea Odame, Best Student in Media Management.
