FARMERS at Asuboi, in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region have expressed worry over the persistent threats from land-guards, which is preventing them from going to their farms.
The ‘Mankrado’ of the town, Nana Annor Agyemfran, who made the announcement at a press conference, said there have been a lot of threats from the land-guards who are trying to take their lands for estate developers.
He said the land-guards are using offensive weapons like guns, machetes and sticks to attack poor farmers, whose lands are being taken for housing projects, claiming land-guards have killed two people in recent times.
“I will urge the government to listen to us and come to our aid. We don’t want to put the law into our hands but if nothing is done, we are going to face them whenever they come. We want the government to come and drag these land-guards from here,” he said, adding “the government made it clear about its intention to collapse land-guard operations in the country, so we are waiting for their help.”
The chief claimed that the Suhum Police is aware of the situation after several reports were made to them and said they are planning to demonstrate to vent out their frustrations.
He also said some unscrupulous developers are trying to take their lands located at a strategic location on the Accra-Kumasi Highway and as a result have deployed many land-guards to the area.
