The Anti Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has conducted investigations into about 550 reported cases of human trafficking within three years.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Oppong Boanuah, who announced this, said the outcome of the investigations had led to a number of convictions, with the latest being the imprisonment of two persons.
He revealed this in a speech read on his behalf by Commissioner of Police (COP) and Director General in charge of legal and prosecution, Prosper Kwami Agblor, during the Attorney General Alliance (AGA) – Africa Annual Conference held in Accra.
Addressing participants, COP Agblor mentioned that the police administration was working with other African states to enhance the work of the cybercrime unit to confront and neutralize the threat posed by modern technology.
“As the nature of crime becomes more regional and global, the GPS will continue to seek cross-border partnerships among others with likeminded partners in Africa and beyond,” he said.
Touching on their relationship with other security agencies in the fight against crime, the IGP said the police service relationship with AGA-Africa was a special one that had grown stronger over the past year.
“In May, 2019, AGA sent two attorneys to facilitate a workshop on cybercrime and electronic evidence for 50 selected officers from the GPS and Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
The training offered to our officers and investigators have equipped them with skills to not only investigate crimes like money laundering, but also to encourage collaboration with other stakeholders in the justice and law and order sector here in Ghana,” he said.
