2 Dead In Techiman Over Election Related Violence

TWO PERSONS have been confirmed dead and six others injured in the Techiman South Constituency in the Bono East Region over election related violence.

Medical Director in charge of Techiman Holy Family Hospital, Dr. Ernest Ameyaw, confirmed eight persons who sustained alleged gunshot wounds were rushed to the emergency ward of the hospital at about 4:30 pm on Tuesday, but one was pronounced dead on arrival.

Dr. Ameyaw said the victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds of which two were in critical condition, four in stable condition and two dead. He, however, was unable to give their names.

It is not clear what led to the shooting allegedly by security forces at the Bono Chempim hall at the Techiman Municipal Assembly premises where collation of eleven constituencies in the Bono East Region took place.

But unconfirmed sources told DAILY GUIDE that party agents of the opposition NDC at the collation centre refused to accept collated results from Hansua electoral area in Techiman South Constituency because the EC allegedly could not find its own original pink sheets but had wanted to use another party’s pink sheet to collate the results.

The alleged incident infuriated supporters of the NDC who started throwing stones into the collation centre, forcing the police to reply with warning shots.

In the process, the stray bullets allegedly hit about eight persons, resulting in the deaths of the two.

Due to the incident, collation of results abruptly truncated until Wednesday morning when the results were declared by the Regional Director of the EC without that of Techiman South.

After collation of 10 constituencies in Bono East in the presidential election, the EC Director, Gabriel Dei Yeboah, said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo polled 153, 341 while former President John Dramani Mahama also got  213, 694.
