The suspected traffickers
FIVE PERSONS suspected to have trafficked nine children from Cameroon to Ghana have been arrested by the Police in Kokrobitey in Accra.
The suspects included four males and a female between the ages of 34 and 48 and the children are believed to be three to 14 years old.
The suspects have been handed over to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further interrogations.
Reports gathered indicated that around 9:00pm on Friday, March 12, 2021, a police patrol team intercepted an Opel Astra taxi cab with registration number BA 1298 X heading to Kokrobitey with the nine children seated at the back of the car.
The source said the police immediately stopped the vehicle and upon interrogation, they suspected the adults to be child traffickers and took them to the Kokrobitey District Police Command for further interrogations.
The Director in charge of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Police CID, Chief Superintendent Mike Baah, when contacted, confirmed the arrest but added that they were yet to establish the fact that the suspects were traffickers.
According to him, upon further interrogations, the lady among the suspects disclosed that the victims were her children and some of them belonged to her own sisters.
“She told us that she brought the children from Cameroon somewhere November last year to Ghana to further their education. The suspect claimed they were on their way to Kokrobitey to attend a party of one of their compatriot when the police accosted them,” the police officer said.
“Currently, the children have been provided shelter but investigations are still ongoing,” he added.
