Obomengman Kuo, a union of citizens of Kwahu-Obomeng in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region, has awarded 20 teachers in the municipality for the second time.
The second edition of the teachers’ award was supposed to be held in 2019 but postponed due to COVID-19 to June 24, 2021.
The programme, held under the Chairmanship of Nana Effah Opinaman III, the Chief of Obomeng-Kwahu, awarded 20 hardworking teachers and the two best JHS students in the area.
The outstanding teachers were selected in the basic schools within the traditional jurisdiction of Obomeng in the Kwahu West Municipality, specifically Nkawkaw Circuit “C”.
Students who excelled at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) were also recognised at the ceremony.
The awardees took home fridges, television sets, gas cooker, standing fan, utensils et al.
Speaking on the theme: “Rekindling the 21st Century Teacher for Quality Education: The Role of the Traditional Authority,” the Chairman for the occasion, Nana Kwasi Dwamena, Krontihene of Obomeng emphasised that, teachers need to be motivated so they can be efficient.
He disclosed plans by the traditional authorities to support the schools that are ready to create and train cultural groups.
He urged the teachers to continue working hard for them to be recognised for the National Teachers Awards to lift the image of Obomengman.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu South, Emmanuel Atta Ofori, speaking on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, pointed out that the successful implementation of the new curriculum requires motivated teachers and the collective effort of all stakeholders.
He stated that the role of teachers in delivering quality education towards national development has been acknowledged by governments.
He commended the traditional authorities for their tremendous support towards education and also bemoaned the use of mobile phones by some teachers during contact hours to record pupils on social media.
He lauded the Obomengman Kuo for instituting the award to challenge teachers in the Obomeng Kwahu Traditional Area to give their best.
Mr. Joseph Asrefi, the Vice-Chairman of Obomengman Kuo, explained that the initiative was a five-year programme introduced by the association to continuously honour hardworking and dedicated teachers in the area.
