A team of personnel belonging to the Anti-Armed Robbery Squad of the Ghana Police Service has come under gun attack in the Eastern Region.
The incident happened on Tuesday along the Bunso – Akyem Ettukrom road where the police were being deployed to the region to fight rampant armed robbery.
The robbers, wielding AK47, were on a robbery expedition at dawn when the police squad who were being transported to their operational areas, arrived at the scene.
The hoodlums upon seeing the police bus started firing and the well-trained officers quickly returned fire and the exchange lasted a few minutes before the robbers fled into the bush.
The police officers then alighted from the bus and said later that they suspect some of the robbers were hit by bullets and has therefore urged the public especially health facilities in the area to be on the lookout for such suspects.
The police retrieved five spent shells of AK 47 rifle used by the robbers at the scene.
According to police sources, it was the exact scene where two highway robbers namely Haruna Amadu and Joseph Nyira, both 25, were arrested on June 5, 2021, after killing a trader in a robbery attack. Their accomplices are still at large.
As part of the effort to combat robbery and other violent crimes, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has deployed 126 personnel from the special Anti-Armed Robbery Squad (AARS) to the region to support the Eastern Regional Police Command to contain the menace.
The contingent is led by Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu and assisted by the Director-General of Operations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mohammed Fuseini Suraji.
