Unity The Way To Go

At long last the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates’ conference has passed off and of course without ado.

Conferences of political parties and other entries in their calendars should be of great concern to the nation because as basis of our democracies they also birth our political leaders.

The riveting of the attention of the nation on the conference as it held in Kumasi was therefore, for justifiable reasons.

It was a conference which saw the leadership and other stakeholders revamping the political grouping through admonitions and adjustments to existing party standards or constitution where necessary towards the future.

With the President serving his constitutionally permitted last term in office the importance of the conference was exigent to the party’s future fortunes.

There are more than two persons eyeing the ultimate in the party-flagbearership- a situation which demands maturity from both leadership and the rank and file membership of the party.

The trampling of feet occurs in such contests when the party leadership does not step in with regulatory measures as was done in the past few days.

The pulse of the party through the body languages of the youth and MPs pointed at a particular direction. Let the party leadership and stakeholders take the party’s interest and the nation’s as the clock ticks for that one decision to be taken.

The demand for unity from the assortment of speakers cannot be underestimated because as an attribute it is sine qua non for breaking the 8, which all party supporters agree must come to pass.

A body of like-minded political characters cannot go into an electoral duel rag-tagged and therefore, in disarray.

Breaking the 8 should as a matter of necessity be latched upon sincerity of purpose.

A half-hearted approach towards this goal would be an exercise in futility which is why President Akufo-Addo said that a decisive step is necessary for Triumph 2024.

If a sitting President can lose an election after a term in office then breaking the 8 which is an obsession of the NPP is not only doable but possible. All it would take is to take a decisive step and that is it.

The unity of the party will go a long way in bringing out the best of the grouping so that the country will be the winner in the end. The sustenance of democracy requires that those with the appropriate pedigree are allowed access to the throttle of governance.

Those with time-tested records bereft of blemishes of integrity must be allowed to be in power.
