Midway Hospital in collaboration with the Methodist Girls Fellowship of the North Kaneshie Circuit has organized a free health screening exercise for children particularly, girls.
The day’s event provided various medical tests for over 150 children including hemoglobin levels, hepatitis, malaria, eye, sugar, and urine testing.
The children also had their weight and height checked and given medication including dewormers and multivitamin.
Medical Director of Midway Hospital, Dr. Gifty Quarshie-Ngissah said the hospital celebrated its 40th anniversary last year and earmarked a series of activities but was unable to carry all of them through because of Covid-19.
“So when the Methodist Girls Fellowship informed us of their 42nd anniversary and the health screening they wanted to undertake, we thought it wise to support them,” she said. “We decided to screen the children and give them some medication and educate them about female health.
Dr. Quarshie-Ngissah advised the public to be mindful of unhealthy eating during the festive season. She said, “Everyone is going out for the junk food and what not and we know that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) are on the high. So as much as you want to indulge we want people to exercise some restraint.
Vice Chair of the circuit youth council of the Church, Derek Ofori Akyea, said Midway Hospital has been a great partner offering free breast screening for its members every October.
“This year for the girls’ anniversary we are happy they are doing this for us,” he said.
He expressed the hope that beneficiaries would receive the needed treatment should any ailment be found through the screening.
He appealed for the health screening to be done yearly or twice a year so that, “the young people would also know their health status and remain healthy for us all.”
