The angry youth on Sunday
THERE WAS drama at Barekese in the Ashanti Region on Sunday when the chief of the town, Nana Amoateng Brenyah, was chased away by irate youth in the community.
Nana Brenyah was said to be observing the Akwasidae festival when he was attacked.
The agitated youth of Barekese, who were singing war songs, reportedly, stormed the palace and chased the chief and some few elders away.
The youth alleged that their chief was gradually becoming an autocratic leader, as he was virtually practising what they termed as “one-man show”.
According to reports, it took the swift intervention of some policemen, who whisked the chief away, thereby preventing physical attacks on him.
The charged youth also accused their chief of indulging in reckless sale of lands. They have since locked the palace and vowed not to allow the chief to return to the town again.
The unexpected attack by the youth resulted in the Akwasidae festival ending abruptly, to the chagrin of people that had thronged the palace.
The angry youth also slaughtered a sheep just in front of the palace to signify the destoolment of their chief.
One Nana Amankwah, who claimed to belong to the royal family of Barekese, confirming the incident on Akoma FM, said that indeed the chief was an autocratic leader.
He alleged that the chief was fond of disrespecting the people, indicating that residents of Barekese, especially the youth, have had enough of the chief’s ‘bad’ leadership.
Nana Amankwah lamented that Barekese has not experienced any significant development ever since Nana Brenyah was enstooled as chief “and it is very bad.”
He, therefore, appealed to the Overlord of Asanteman, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to listen to the cry of Barekese people and destool the chief without delay.
