In the Sekyere Kumawu constituency of the Ashanti Region, a by-election to find a replacement for the late Member of Parliament, Philip Basoah is currently underway.
Voting has officially started across the 75 polling stations in the constituency as a total of 34,900 registered voters are expected to cast their votes.
The by-election was necessitated by the demise of the MP who passed away in March 2023.
Leading members of the two main political parties, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have all put in various efforts seeking to either return or annex the parliamentary seat.
The Electoral Commission which is organising the by-election, has assured that all necessary materials are ready for today’s polls.
The Police have also beefed up security with heavily armed personnel across the polling stations.
They have shown their readiness to provide maximum security protection for the conduct of the by-election.
The parliamentary candidates are Akwasi Amankwaa popularly known as ‘Tom Cee’, of the NDC, Ernest Yaw Anim of the NPP, and two other independent candidates both with the same name, Kwaku Duah.
