ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI (AGA) Obuasi Mine, has commissioned a 20-seater toilet facility at Anyimadukrom, a suburb of Obuasi in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti Region as part of its 10-year Socio Economic Development Plan (SEDP).
Commissioning the project, Emmanuel Baidoo, Senior Manager, Sustainability, at AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, said the facility was constructed in consultations with the Obuasi East District Assembly and the leadership of Anyimadukrom to improve sanitation and hygiene in the community.
“The facility is a response to the community’s request, having realised it was their priority to have such a project to combat open defecation in the area,” he disclosed.
The facility, he added, comprised of 10 male and 10 female cubicles, handwashing sinks, store room and an attendant room.
He applauded the leadership of the community for strategically siting the project close to a cluster of schools to address some of the needs that the schools might have identified.
“Apart from the schools getting their own sanitary facility, I think this facility will definitely improve and enhance environmental cleanliness in the community and improve the health and well-being of the people,” he opined.
The Senior Manager at AGA, Obuasi Mine, tasked the community to take good care of the facility, which is valued at GH¢630,000.
The Odikro of Anyimadukrom, Nana Takyi Mensah, also thanked the mining giant for the kind gesture and asked the residents to patronise the facility.
Nana Serwaa Bruwaa II, the queenmother of Akrokerri, in her brief remarks, appealed to the community to maintain the facility to last long.
She also applauded AGA for coming to the aid of the people of Obuasi whenever they call on them for support.
For his part, Lamin Yakubu, Assembly Member for Anyimadukrom Electoral Area, commended AGA for heeding to their plea of constructing the facility in the community.
