‘Support Innovative Children Interested In TVET’

Peter Antwi Boasiako addressing journalists

Deputy Director General, Technical Vocational Education, and Training (TVET), Peter Antwi Boasiako, has encouraged parents to encourage their children to pursue creative innovations and technical vocational training to bridge the unemployment gap.

According to Dr. Boasiako, the era where parents restrict their children from partaking in creative innovation and vocational arts training with the notion that the practices are reserved for the less intelligent children has long passed.

“Providing the needed encouragement as a parent to your child who finds interest in technical and vocational skills will help him succeed in life. TVET plays a vital role in supporting economic growth and development,” he said.

Dr. Boasiako made this appeal in an interview with journalists at the WorldSkills Ghana Zonal Skills Competition held in Accra.

As part of the ‘MY TVET’ campaign, the Commission for TVET (CTVET) introduced skills competitions as part of its efforts to prepare innovative minds for the world.

CTVET, together with other partners coordinates the overall national competition. It also prepares national winners for international skills competitions such as the WorldSkills Competition. This is to ensure that the youth are exposed to a variety of skill areas and technology.

The young competitors from Ghana who represented the country during the 2022 WorldSkills Africa Competition held in Swakopmund, Namibia made Ghana proud on Saturday, April 2, 2022. They picked up four medals at the closing and awards ceremony.

Under the auspices of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), Ghana won gold in the Mechanical Engineering CAD and Web Technology competitions. Ghana also won silver in Fashion Technology and Electrical Installation.

He reiterated that when parents encourage their wards to pursue their TVET dreams, they stand a chance of representing the country on the world stage. “The child gets the needed exposure through completion to exploit and in the long run the opportunity to solve the basic things we need to address in moving forward as a country,” he added.

The 2023 WorldSkills Ghana Zonal Skills Competition had the southern zone leading the challenge on June 26-29 in Accra.

A total of 17 participants were selected to participate in the competition, which focused on electrical installation, bricklaying, welding, macaronis, fashion, technology, auto body repair, automobile, graphic design, etc.

Meanwhile, the northern zone competition will take place from July 3-6, 2023.
