Golden Star Wassa Gets New Board Member

The group manager, corporate affairs of Golden Star Resources Limited, Gerard Boakye has been appointed as an executive director to the board of the company in the Western Region

Golden Star Wassa Limited (Wassa) is a gold mining company in the Western Region which has been in operation since 2003.

A statement issued by the company indicated that the new appointment of Mr. Boakye takes effect from June this year.

The statement stated that Mr. Boakye comes into the new role with a wealth of experience in the extractive industry of Ghana, in the areas of corporate affairs, public relations and sustainable development.

Before joining Golden Star in March 2012, the new executive director worked with Gold Fields Ghana Limited and played active and vital roles in the development and implementation of activities.

The activities were in the areas of sustainable development policies and programmes, environmental compliance, as well as community and stakeholder engagement.

Golden Star Resources commenced production from its surface operation in 2005 and commercial production was achieved at Wassa underground on January 1, 2017. In early 2018 Wassa transitioned into an underground-focused operation.

In January 2022, golden star Wassa was acquired by Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining Co. Limited (chifeng gold), a publicly listed company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in China with more than five operating mines in the Asia Pacific Region.

The acquisition was in line with the strategy to place golden star Wassa on a larger platform to support the delivery of its growth.

According to the statement, Chifeng Gold, demonstrated the ability to invest and grow the Wassa mine. It also provided an opportunity to optimize underground operations and integrate surface operations to enable Wassa to realize its potential.
