Managing Director (MD) of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited (PSGL), Justice Acquah, in the Western Region was last Friday adjudged the best Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the 4th Paa Grant Medals for Business Excellence Award Ceremony organized in the region.
Mr. Acquah was given the honor for his incredible and transformative work at Sankofa Gold which has propeled the company to its current strong and enviable level.
Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited is a state-owned gold mining company established in 1994 to extract gold mainly from old tailings.
The company stopped operation in 2014 and several appeals by the residents on successive governments to help revive it were allegedly not adhered to.
However, President Akufo-Addo, in his 2016electioneering campaign, promised the people of Prestea that the company will resume production.
So upon assumption of office, the President charged the majority shareholder, which is the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) – to constitute a committee to ensure the company was revived.
In 2018, the committee managed to ensure that the company started operation.
It is the only mining company wholly owned and operated by Ghanaians without expatriate involvement.
The people of Prestea have therefore praised the current government for making the rejuvenation of the mining company its topmost priority.
They pointed out that the contribution of PSGL to the Prestea local economy was enormous and that it shut down in 2014 stalled business and commercial activities in the once vibrant mining town.
