NMC Chases Power FM For Insulting Samira Bawumia, Fulanis

The National Media Commission (NMC) is calling for an apology from Accra-based radio station, Power FM after an incident where the Second Lady Samira Bawumia and the Fulani Community were allegedly insulted on air.

In a letter dated November 6, 2023, the NMC expressed deep concern over the offensive broadcast that occurred on November 1, 2023.

The NMC received a complaint regarding the broadcast, during which a commentator used gender-based and ethnic slurs to attack Mrs. Bawumia and the Fulanis. The NMC stated in the letter that such behavior is unacceptable and has detrimental effects on national cohesion, peace, and development.

The letter further criticized the show’s presenter, accusing them of being unprofessional and deceitful.

The NMC noted that the presenter failed to moderate the discussion and instead encouraged the commentator to continue with the offensive remarks.

The NMC demanded an apology from Authentic Media Company, the parent company of Power FM by Julius Debrah, former Chief of Staff of the Mahama government.

They also requested that apologies be made to H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia, the Second Lady, and the Fulani Community, as well as to the Ghanaian public, whose sensibilities were breached by the broadcast.

Authentic Media Company Limited has been given a deadline of November 11, 2023, to issue the apology.
The NMC warned that failure to comply with this demand may result in further actions being taken against the media house.
