The Opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) call for a forensic audit of the voter register has been dismissed by Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto Sub-Committee on the Economy.
With only 81 days remaining until the general election, the former MP for New Juaben South, Dr Assibey-Yeboah questioned the NDC’s motives, suggesting that their concerns are a thinly veiled attempt to disrupt the electoral process.
The NDC has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with the provisional voter register, alleging discrepancies such as bloating in some polling stations.
The party claims that these irregularities are evidence of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) attempts to rig the elections in favor of the governing NPP.
On September 17, supporters of the NDC took to the streets in all 16 regional capitals, protesting the alleged discrepancies in the voter register.
The demonstration, dubbed “Enough is Enough,” marked a significant escalation in the NDC’s efforts to highlight their concerns.
Electoral Commission’s Response
The EC has maintained that it has followed due processes, including: registration, mop-up exercises, Display of the provisional register for verification and correction.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah speaking on the issue emphasized that the NDC’s call for a forensic audit comes too late, with the election deadline fast approaching.
He questioned whether the NDC is prepared to delay the election date, highlighting the potential consequences of such a move.
NPP’s Stance
The NPP views the NDC’s call for a forensic audit as a delaying tactic, aimed at disrupting the electoral process.
Dr Assibey-Yeboah attributed NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama’s recent criticism of pastors, chiefs, and others to growing frustration within the party.
