Kwahuhene Not Destooled — Traditional Council

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II

The Office of the Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area has firmly refuted claims that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II has been destooled.

This statement is in response to a misleading video circulating on social media, which purportedly depicted a destoolment procedure involving the Kwahuhene.

The Kwahu Traditional Council categorically stated that these claims are not only false but also violate both legal standards and the customs of Kwahu.

The council expressed concern that the dissemination of this misleading footage, particularly among known politicians, constitutes an attack on the rich heritage and traditions of the Kwahu people.

In an official statement signed by Nana JK Boadi of the Kwahu Traditional Council, it was emphasised that no formal charges have ever been brought against Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II that would warrant any destoolment process.

The statement further indicated that he has not been found liable for any misconduct in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of the Agricultural Development Bank.

The council raised concerns about the demand for his resignation from the Banking Supervision Division of the Bank of Ghana, noting that it came without an opportunity for the Kwahuhene to respond to the allegations, thus raising questions about due process.

In light of these developments, the statement added that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II has chosen to step aside temporarily to facilitate an appropriate resolution of the matter. However, the council expressed bewilderment over the circulation of a video falsely suggesting his destoolment, especially in the absence of any findings against him.

“We urge the good people of Kwahu and subjects of the Esono Gyimah Mampong Agyei Stool to remain calm and steadfast in support of the Paramountcy,” the statement read.

“The actions of individuals attempting to tarnish the reputation of Kwahuman and the Kwahuhene without proper hearings should not be tolerated,” it added.

It would be recalled that the Paramount Chief of Kwahu in the Eastern Region, who doubles as the Board Chairman of the state-owned Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, was asked to resign immediately from his role.

The central bank gave the directive after a businessman petitioned President Akufo-Addo and accused the Board Chair of abuse of office and extortion to the tune of GH¢2 million.

The Bank of Ghana, in a letter dated October 10, said the chief’s “continued holding of office as a Director of the ADB has become untenable due to the irreparable damage these events have caused to the image of the bank.”

It said, “In accordance with Section 103 (2)(d) Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (ACT 930), you are directed to immediately resign from your position as a director of the ADB and appropriately handover.”
