Barely some six weeks to the upcoming general elections, the Volta Region, historically a stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is witnessing a seismic shift in its political landscape, as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign gains momentum.
Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, is making waves among the region’s youth, particularly Gen Z.
This demographic’s support for Dr Bawumia signals a potential turning point in the region’s political allegiance.
Dr Bawumia since Sunday has been in the region engaging chiefs, stakeholders and the residents of the region across various constituencies to sell his message.
For decades, the NDC has dominated the Volta Region, with the party’s roots running deep in the area.
However, former President John Dramani Mahama recently rebuked the people of Volta Region for increasingly embracing the NPP in the stronghold of the NDC.
Mr Mahama who is currently no where to be found expressed concern over the NPP’s growing influence during his four-day tour of the region.

Dr. Bawumia’s message of development, progress, and economic empowerment resonates with Volta youth.
Comparing Development Records
While the NDC boasts of reshaping roads, the NPP’s focus on sustainable development and job creation gains traction.
The NDC’s road project benefits select constituencies, but the NPP’s emphasis on long-term growth attracts younger voters.
2024 Elections: A Litmus Test
The upcoming elections will determine if the NPP’s momentum can overcome the NDC’s historical dominance.
Dr. Bawumia’s popularity among Gen Z voters may signal a changing of the guard.
Challenges and Opportunities
The NPP must overcome perceptions of disconnection from the region’s concerns, as the NDC faces its own challenges, including internal divisions and a dwindling grassroots presence.
