In a significant development, an Accra Circuit Court has discharged four additional protesters from the Democracy Hub, following the state’s withdrawal of charges.
This brings the total number of freed protesters to 11, sparking hopes of resolution among the activist community.
Background of the Protests
The Democracy Hub protests, held from September 21 to 23, aimed to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability.
However, the demonstrations turned tumultuous, leading to the arrest of 53 protesters.
The arrests sparked widespread concern about the state of freedom of expression and assembly in Ghana.
The Legal Battle
The state initially charged the protesters with various offenses, including unlawful assembly and disturbing the peace.
However, in a surprising move, the prosecution team withdrew the charges and filed new ones on September 25.
Previous Discharges
On October 22, seven protesters were discharged under similar circumstances, leaving many wondering about the rationale behind the state’s decision.
