Parliament is set to reconvene in early November, following the Majority Caucus’ formal request for an emergency meeting to address critical national issues.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, announced this during an interaction with a delegation from the Council of State.

The five-member delegation, led by the Chairman of the Council of State, Nana Otuo Serebour, had called on the Speaker to discuss recent developments in Parliament that led to its indefinite adjournment on October 22, 2024.

After thorough deliberation, the Council expressed readiness to assist the Speaker and the leadership of the House in resolving any impasse to pave the way for Parliament’s recall.

The Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament, in a statement after the meeting, said Speaker Bagbin briefed the delegation on the current happenings in the House.

According to the statement, the Speaker reaffirmed his dedication to the country’s democracy and Ghanaians.

The statement said the Council commended the Speaker’s efficient handling of Parliament and leadership in organisations like the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association International (CPA) and Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL).

The statement revealed that Nana Otuo Serebour encouraged Mr. Bagbin to continue his “excellent work” for the country and its citizens.

The statement indicated that Speaker Bagbin informed the Council of State members that he would lead a Ghanaian delegation to the 67th CPA International Conference in Sydney, Australia, from November 3-8, where he will hand over to the newly elected CPA President.

According to the statement, the delegation includes the former Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the two Leaders of the House, as well as two Whips and the Clerk to Parliament, and other officials of the Parliamentary Service.

“The Rt. Hon Speaker however indicated that he will return to Ghana earlier than anticipated, due to a request by Members of Parliament to recall Parliament.

“He indicated that his office has already started processes to recall the House in early November,” the statement stressed.
