The collapsed pit
A 23-year-old man, identified as Osei Kwabena from Offinso, has met his untimely death at a galamsey site after the mining pit collapsed on him at Nkonteng in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Three others rescued by some Good Samaritans are also fighting for their lives at the Nkawie Government Hospital after sustaining various degrees of injuries.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at a morgue awaiting autopsy.
Confirming the incident to the DAILY GUIDE, the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Koyim Mahama Iddrisu, disclosed that he received a distress call from a resident at the galamsey site about the incident.
“I received a distress call from a good citizen on Monday, December 16, 2024 around 9pm that a galamsey pit has caved in on four people. They managed to save three, but were unable to save the deceased. The three were immediately transported to the hospital and are receiving treatment,” he said.
The NADMO officer disclosed that the illegal miners were mining close to a forest, which has in recent times come under siege.
“This is not the first time this has happened, and I will urge the security agencies to intervene to flush out these nation wreckers,” he lamented.
Koyim Mahama expressed concerns about the rampant rate of these nefarious activities at the enclave, and appealed to security agencies to take brutal actions against the perpetrators.
