Some youths of Nzema in the Western Region have called on the President to appoint an Nzema as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) at Atuabo in the Ellembelle District.
The youth, calling themselves the ‘Nzema Youth Parliament,’ stressed that now that President John Dramani Mahama has begun appointing state officials to administer the country’s affairs, they expect the Ghana Gas CEO position to be given to an Nzema.
The youth noted that appointing someone from the Nzema enclave to manage the Gas company would be a blessing rather than a curse to the people of Nzema.
The leader of the group, Jonas Kabutey, stated this in an interview in the Nzema East Municipality.
He said the appointment of an indigene from Nzema to oversee the gas processing plant would align with the local content policy.
“This will also allow people within the oil and gas enclave with the requisite qualifications to take advantage and gain employment in the company,” he added.
He said that although Ghana Gas is a national asset, it needs someone who will ensure that people within the enclave are not left worse off.
He explained that most residents’ livelihoods had been affected by oil and gas activities in the area.
Mr. Kabutey also noted that environmental hazards resulting from oil and gas activities posed challenges to the people.
He called on President Mahama to heed the petition of the youth and traditional leaders in the Nzema area by appointing a distinguished individual from Nzema to manage operations at Ghana Gas.
This, he indicated, would ensure peace and harmony at the company and prevent any disturbances by youth groups in the Nzema enclave.
