CCTV Footage Leads To Arrest Of Late KNUST Student’s Boyfriend

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect, Daniel Tuffour, in connection with the death of Joana Yabani Deladem Aku, a 21-year-old level 400 Biological Science student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

Following a review of CCTV footage, Daniel Tuffour was identified as a hostel mate of the victim.

According to a statement released by the Ghana Police Service and signed by the Director of Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, preliminary investigations revealed that the late student was found unresponsive behind the Central Laboratory on campus in the early hours of February 27, 2025.

“She was pronounced dead by medical authorities from KNUST Hospital, who examined the body at the scene before it was transported to the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement read.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi noted that a subsequent police examination of the body revealed signs of violence.

The statement further indicated that Daniel Tuffour was arrested following additional crime scene investigations and is currently in custody, assisting with the investigation.

Authorities have also retrieved evidence from the suspect, including the attire he wore during the incident, which has sent shockwaves throughout the university community.

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has personally engaged with the family of the deceased to express condolences and assure them that justice will be served.

He also met with the university community to discuss collaborative efforts between the police and the university aimed at enhancing safety for all students.
