A scene from the Oscars
A 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit Hollywood on Sunday night, just as stars gathered for post-Oscars celebrations. The quake’s epicenter was located in North Hollywood, just a few miles from the Dolby Theatre, where the Academy Awards had been held earlier.
The tremor struck shortly after 10:00 PM local time while celebrities were at the Vanity Fair afterparty. Eyewitnesses reported feeling a sharp jolt, with some describing high-rise buildings wobbling. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the earthquake was felt across much of Los Angeles, though no tsunami warning was issued. The Los Angeles Fire Department noted that the shaking was felt throughout downtown LA, but no major action was required.
This earthquake is part of a series of tremors in Southern California, with around 40 recorded since the start of March, though most were too small to be felt. The largest recent quake was a 3.7 magnitude tremor near Malibu last month.
At the Vanity Fair afterparty, guests were startled by the shaking, with some even screaming. One local resident called it the strongest earthquake she had ever felt. BBC reporter Emma Vardy, who was in a high-rise building during the tremor, described the experience as “unlike anything I’ve felt before.”
Despite the scare, there have been no reports of serious damage or injuries.
