I’m Not On The Run – Ex-GIIF CEO

Solomon Asamoah

Former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Solomon Asamoah, has debunked claims he is hiding in Senegal as state security agencies investigate him for a $2 million payment for the non-existent Skytrain project.

According to him, he traveled out of Ghana on Friday, March 21, 2025, to attend scheduled board meetings as part of a corporate responsibility that was planned well in advance.

“Prior to my departure, I have been present in Ghana for long periods in both February and March. During this period, I was never contacted by any government official in relation to an invitation to assist in any investigation,” Mr. Asamoah indicated in a statement.

His statement was in response to allegations by the Attorney General (AG) and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine that the former GIIF CEO was playing hide and seek with investigative bodies although he has indicated that he would return in three months.

“I’m sure from Senegal he will go somewhere else. Usually what they do is that they go to a country where they know that you don’t have an extradition treaty, so I can’t request that he is extradited to stand trial. But we are monitoring him. I’m sure that one day we will get him, he will arrive in this country either voluntarily or involuntarily,” Dr. Ayine said.

The Attorney General also indicated that there was no board approval for the transaction, and the conditions precedent to disbursement had not been met.

Denial

But Mr. Asamoah, in a statement, denied the allegations made against him by the AG, describing it as false and incorrect as well as being “entirely inaccurate and untrue.”

According to him, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, a day after departure from Accra, he was indeed contacted via WhatsApp by an official of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) who requested an online meeting with him.

Mr. Asamoah said he agreed to the said meeting which was to be held on Wednesday, March 26, at 4 pm. “This would enable me to respond to any misconceptions and misunderstandings on any substantive matter related to investments by GIIF,” the statement pointed out.

He continued that, throughout his long international career in premier global institutions, he had worked with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

“This includes the seven years I ran GIIF, where the institution was profitable every year and made cumulative net profits of over GH¢2.5 billion, which is more than double the original capital (GH¢1.2 billion) given to GIIF by the Government of Ghana,” he pointed out.

Mr. Asamoah further indicated that all these funds have been reinvested back into GIIF, and has enabled GIIF to grow from a GH¢1.2 billion to GH¢5.2 billion fund at year-end 2023.

“This has made GIIF one of the best-performing infrastructure funds on the African continent,” he said.

He also denied committing any crime during his time at the Fund, stressing that he has absolutely no reason to run away from justice.

“I will return home shortly to offer all the assistance and information necessary to support the AG’s investigations, which will ultimately vindicate my reputation and integrity,” Mr. Asamoah added.
