ECG Container Theft: 13 Arrests, 40 Containers Recovered

The Chinese suspects

The National Security has apprehended 12 Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at Tema Port.

The operation took place on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at two aluminum smelting companies near the Shai Hills Game Reserve where they were believed to be involved in the illegal processing of electrical cables.

Evidence suggests that the cables were being melted into aluminum bars for export.

In addition to the arrests, security agencies are actively pursuing another Chinese national who remains at large. Authorities are committed to tracking down all individuals involved in this criminal syndicate.

Energy Minister, John Jinapor, confirmed to TV3 that National Security has successfully recovered 40 of the over 1000 missing containers from a warehouse in Kpone.

An Indian national, who owns the facility where the containers were discovered, has also been arrested. He claims to have legally purchased the containers last year, but investigations are ongoing to verify his claims.

“The information I received this morning indicates that approximately 40 containers have been traced to a specific terminal or warehouse in Kpone owned by an Indian national. All 40 containers have been confiscated and moved to a secure location,” Mr. Jinapor stated.

The ECG container scandal has ignited national outrage following revelations from an investigative committee led by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah.

The committee found discrepancies between ECG records, which indicated 2,491 uncleared containers at Tema Port, and an independent audit that revealed only 1,134—leaving 1,347 containers unaccounted for.

Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to recovering all missing containers and bringing those responsible to justice.
