The one-week remembrance ceremony of the late veteran disc jockey (DJ)and staff member of the Multimedia Group Limited, Samuel Tei Mensah Nartey, popularly known as DJ Awana, took place at the Aggrey Road School Park near old Adom FM in Tema Community 2.
DJ Awana passed away at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra on Sunday, April 6, 2025, after a brief illness. The cause of his death is yet to be made public.
DJ Awana’s death came as a shock to fans and figures across the industry, with tributes flooding social media following his death.
Following the announcement of the veteran DJ’s passing, a number of his colleagues, well-known individuals and ardent fans posted condolences on social media.
They stated that the music business has lost a comrade who had spent his entire life entertaining music lovers.
They pointed out that DJ Awana was a legend DJ in Ghanaian music, and that his departure is undoubtedly a great loss for the whole music business.
The one week ceremony attracted high profile personalities in the creative industry, includingcolleagues from the Multimedia Group Limited (MGL), among others, who were at the venue to commiserate with the family.
Some of the personalities at the event include the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MGL, Ken Ansah; former Adom FM Programmes Manager, Daddy Bosco; General Manager of Adom Brands, Abdulai Awudu; General Manager for Joy Brands, Fiifi Koomson; Adom FM Programmes Manager, Joshua Tigo, Asempa FM Programmes Manager, Philip Osei Bonsu alongside several presenters and other members of staff.
Gospel musicians such as Mary Ghansah and Celestine Donkor delivered soul-lifting performances that touched the hearts of all present.
Celestine Donkor and her husband Kofi Donkor donated GH₵500 to the family and further pledged to support DJ Awana’s children through to their university education — a gesture that moved many.
Colleagues from the Multimedia Group also donated GH₵4,000 and 20 packs of bottled water to the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, the family has announced that DJ Awana will be laid to rest on September 27, 2025 at the Prampram Cemetery.
