Pit Swallows Illegal Miner

 

A 40-YEAR-old illegal miner has met his untimely death after he was trapped in a deep mining pit, whilst digging for gold at Adiembra near Afari, in the Ashanti Region.

The Nyinahin District Police, in a press statement, which has been sighted by the DAILY GUIDE, confirming the unfortunate incident, identified the deceased as Donkor Sumaila.

According to the police, the body of the miner has since been deposited at the Nyinahin Community Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, to help determine the exact cause of death.

Narrating what led to Sumaila’s death, the police said one Eric Dwamena of Afari, at 12 noon on May 2, 2025, reported to the police that a mining pit had collapsed on Sumaila at Adiembra.

The complainant also informed the police that Sumaila was eventually pulled out from the pit by people at the scene, but he didn’t survive as he had already given up the ghost by the time he received help.

“On receipt of the report, police together with the complainant, proceeded to the scene and found Donkor Sumaila, aged 40, now deceased, lying dead and covered with fresh leaves, wearing a blue shirt over a black short smeared with mud,” the police statement disclosed.

The body, the police statement continued, “was inspected and blood was found oozing from his head and ears,” adding that photographs of the body were taken at the scene to support in investigations.

According to the police, the body was conveyed to the mortuary for safe keeping and autopsy, which findings would greatly help in investigations into the demise of the miner.
