The Concerned Youth and Branch Executives of Tamale Central Constituency, addressing journalists in Tamale
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Concerned Youth and Branch Executives of the Tamale Central Constituency, have rejected attempts to impose a candidate on the constituency to replace the late parliamentary representative, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The Tamale Central Constituency seat has been vacant since the tragic passing of Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who was one of the victims of the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash near Adansi Brofoyedru in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
The Concerned Youth and Branch Executives, indicated that they would resist any imposition by the party regarding the upcoming by-election.
“It has come to our attention that certain leaders within our party, along with some self-serving individuals in the region, intend to impose a candidate on Tamale Central, bypassing the will of the grassroots and the democratic traditions of the NDC. We, the Branch Executives, are the legitimate representatives of the people of Tamale Central, and it is our duty to safeguard their interests and ensure their voices are heard. Any attempt to impose a candidate undermines our party’s democratic values and contradicts the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and participation that the NDC has always championed,” they stated.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Tamale, Abdul Mumin Nacem, Convener of the Concerned Youth and Branch Executives, warned that imposing a candidate could risk dividing the party at the constituency level.
“The people of Tamale Central deserve the right to choose their representative, especially during this difficult period of mourning and transition. Imposing a candidate risks dividing our community instead of uniting us, and the consequences could be disastrous if the party or any self-serving individual attempts to do so,” he disclosed.
Nacem called on the party leadership to facilitate a free, fair, and inclusive selection process to identify a suitable candidate who can continue the legacy of the late Member of Parliament (MP).
“We urge for a selection process that truly reflects the will of the people of the Tamale Central Constituency. Decisions that could jeopardise party unity should be avoided,” he noted.
He assured that their commitment to unity, progress, and development in Tamale Central remains unshaken.
“We call on all stakeholders to work together in harmony, to honour the legacy of our late MP, and to ensure that his successor is chosen through the democratic principles he upheld.
“Let us remember that our greatest strength as a party lies in our unity, inclusiveness, and respect for democratic values. We trust that the leadership of the NDC will act justly and in the best interest of our constituency and the nation,” he added.
