A private Hyundai Hiaci ambulance with registration number GX 277-20 has been intercepted by the Accra Regional Police Command for allegedly transporting narcotics to Labadi.
According to a police statement, the interception followed sustained surveillance and was carried out on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The vehicle was stopped in front of the Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami.
Police arrested 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda after he claimed ownership of the vehicle and the suspected substances found inside.
A search of the ambulance uncovered dried leaves believed to be cannabis. Officers retrieved 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected drug.
Further investigations revealed that the consignment had been transported from Kpando in the Volta North Region to Accra for onward distribution. Police said Tuanda admitted to engaging in the illegal trade since 2024.
The police also disclosed that Tuanda had purchased the Hyundai Hiaci as a regular vehicle before converting it into an ambulance by fitting a siren and applying emergency markings.
Before that, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for similar activities. In addition to drug trafficking, the converted ambulance was sometimes used to transport dead bodies.
The police have since impounded the ambulance, with the suspected drugs held as evidence. The exhibits will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for testing.
Tuanda is currently being processed for court as investigations continue.
