Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has apologised to Ghanaians for the mistakes made by the NPP government while in power, assuring that lessons have been learned as the party prepares for future elections.
Speaking to party supporters in Kumasi during his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia admitted that both the government and the party fell short in governance before the 2024 elections.
“After the 2024 elections, we have done our research. We know the NPP government and the party made a lot of mistakes in governance. There were things we needed to do which we didn’t, and others we did that, if we had had the benefit of background, we would not have done them,” he said.
He emphasised that responsibility for those shortcomings was collective. “We are all to be blamed – Vice President, Ministers, MPs, Board Chairmen, appointees. We have all made mistakes and please forgive us. We’re sorry. We have learned our lessons,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia assured delegates and supporters that, if chosen as the party’s flagbearer and elected President, he would ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.
“If, by the grace of God, you make me the flagbearer and I become the President, these will not happen again. They will not happen again,” he pledged.
His remarks formed part of a three-day zonal Constituency Executives Engagement in the Ashanti Region, where he met with Constituency Executives, the Regional Council of Elders, and other stakeholders.
The tour covered the Adansi Zone (Adansi Asokwa, Akrofuom, Fomena, Obuasi East and West, New Edubiase), the Amansie Zone (Bekwai, Bosomtwe, Manso Adubia, Manso Nkwanta and Odotobri), and the Asante Akyem Zone (Asante Akyem North, South, Central and Bosome Freho).
Rounding off the engagements on Friday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted his proven record of innovative thinking and commitment to the ordinary Ghanaian as compelling reasons to be retained as the NPP’s candidate.
He urged delegates to vote for him on January 31, 2026, describing himself as the “most Prepared, Formidable and Winnable” candidate to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
He also reminded party members of historic electoral trends, noting that the fastest path back to power for any opposition party in Ghana has been to build upon the marketed strengths of its previous candidate.
“Day 2 of my zonal Constituency Executives Engagement in Ashanti Region was an opportunity to reignite the spirit of the Party at the grassroots, especially in the heartbeat of the NPP,” he said.
“With the support of all party members, and a united front going into the 2028 elections, the choice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as our Party’s flagbearer is a proven path back to the Jubilee House. I am Prepared, Formidable and Winnable. Let us all win with Bawumia,” he stated.
