North East NYA Holds Campaign Against Drug Abuse

Participants embarking on the ‘Walk for Life, Red Means Stop’ campaign against drug abuse in Nalerigu

The North East Regional Directorate of the National Youth Authority (NYA) has embarked on “Walk for Life” campaign, themed “Red Means Stop,” which brought together thousands of youth, students, traditional leaders, security personnel, and community members in a collective effort to combat drug and substance abuse.

The event commenced in the township of Nalerigu and ended in a rally sending a message to the youth to ensure they desist from engaging in drugs and addiction.

The North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, commended NYA for its dedication to protecting the next generation.

He lamented about the devastating impact of drug abuse on the aspirations of young people, and called on parents, community leaders, and youth organisations to join forces in declaring, “Enough is enough.”

“The rising intake of substance abuse among our youth is a ticking time bomb. We cannot stand idly by while the futures of our young people are jeopardised. Red means stop, and today, we are putting an end to the drug crisis,” he stressed.

The North East Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Mr. Robert Kampi Laari, encouraged young individuals to focus their energies on constructive activities such as agribusiness, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and peacebuilding, rather than squandering their potential on drugs.

According to him, the region’s development is closely tied to the health, strength, and creativity of its youth.

Representatives from security agencies at the event reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying efforts against the distribution and use of illegal substances.

Traditional leaders also offered their support, reminding the youth of Mamprugu’s rich heritage that should not be marred by addiction.

The event also featured health screenings, music, and social interactions, leaving participants motivated to become advocates for a drug-free society.
