Limitations Of Non-Alignment

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

We could not agree more with the stance of government on the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Last week’s Minority in Parliament’s statement which condemned the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and of course government on the situation in Gaza refers.

The Minority sought to remind the minister about Ghana’s non-aligned status on world affairs and for which reason any remark seeking to pitch Ghana one of the sides in the Israeli war in Gaza is in breach of the non-aligned status of the country.

We demur on this because whether we like it or not, a genocide is ongoing in Gaza and the world has not responded robustly enough to stop the deliberate onslaught against the people of this part of the Middle East, the majority of which victims are women and children.

What is happening in Gaza meets the description of a genocide.

The non-alignment status has its limitations; countries which constitute the non-aligned movement of the world cannot fold their arms because of their status, as one country seeks to wipe out people belonging to one stock.

Although the holocaust remains a controversial subject; with some believing that it did not happen, while others think it did.

Be it as it may, Jews were massacred in Nazi concentration camps, and this is documented. The holocaust took place in Auschwitz, and history continues to treat this subject with tenderness.

The world should wait for the Jews to achieve their aim in Gaza before jumping into the fray with litany of condemnation. Let them act now.

It beats our imagination when efforts are made to whitewash what is happening in Gaza today; the Jewish lobby in America is expending so much money to change the narrative.

We might not have the military might as others to intervene in the reckless bloodletting enterprise of Israel in Gaza, but we have the voice to state our position on the disturbing situation.

We live in an unjust world where the economically and military powerful do as they please.

But for the recent recognition of the State of Palestine by France, Britain, Canada and Belgium, we can conclude that nothing is being done to stop the massacre in Gaza as Benjamin Netanyahu backed by America weaponises food as part of the means of wiping out the Gazans.

Although symbolic, the recognition of a Palestinian State by the aforementioned countries is coming at a time when the Israeli war machine has intensified its killing of Gazans who are already starving as the world watches.

The US policy on Israel is something which defies comprehension. With her leverage on Israel, the US under Donald Trump is not showing concern about the ongoing carnage.

Non-alignment does not imply folding our arms as such an unjust murder of innocent lives continues.

Posterity would judge the world negatively when nothing is done to stop the genocide in Gaza.

As for Britain, we hold them responsible for not doing enough to control the outcome of the Balfour Declaration which birthed Israel.
