Mining Pit Swallows Teenager, One Other

TWO PRECIOUS souls, including a teenager, have been lost through an accident at a mining site at Mpatuom, a farming community in the Ashanti Region.

The two deceased persons have since been identified by the Nkawie District Police as Kwaku Gyenin, 45, and a teenager, Kojo Minlib, who is just 19 years old.

The two aforementioned people, reportedly, went to search for gold in an abandoned pit at Mpatuam around 4am on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

Unfortunately, calamity struck as the deep pit suddenly caved in and trapped them when they were busily digging for the precious metal.

Some Good Samaritans at the accident scene, reportedly, did their utmost best to rescue the two people, but it was too late as they had already given up the ghost.

The heartbreaking incident was therefore reported to the Nkawie District Police, who quickly dispatched some officers to the crime scene to start investigations.

“Today, 16/11/2025 at about 0610 hours, Noah Nyunfoon of Mpatuam came to the station and reported that, on same day at about 0400 hours, Kwaku Gyenin, aged 45 years and Kojo Minlib, aged 19 years, were doing illegal mining at Mpatuom.

“And in the process, the pit collapsed and they were trapped. On receipt of complaint, police proceeded to the scene but the bodies were already removed from the mud,” a police report said.

According to the police, photographs were taken and the bodies conveyed and deposited at the Frimpong Boateng Medical Center mortuary, Toase, for preservation and autopsy.
