IBF Hails John Laryea As Continental Africa Featherweight Champion

The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has formally congratulated Ghanaian boxer John Laryea on his crowning as the Continental Africa Featherweight Champion, following his latest triumph in the ring.

Laryea earned the prestigious recognition after an emphatic victory over compatriot Holy Dorgbetor in December 2025, during a thrilling bout staged in Accra.

The contest, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, was organised under Sharaf Mahama’s Legacy Rise Sports and lived up to expectations with its fast-paced and action-packed display.

Nicknamed the “Expensive Boxer,” Laryea’s win marked another significant milestone in his career, elevating him to triple champion status.

He had previously secured the WBO Africa Featherweight title on two occasions, and the addition of the IBF Continental Africa belt further underlines his rising stature on the continental boxing scene.

In an official letter dated January 12, 2026, the IBF praised Laryea for his achievement and expressed confidence in his ability to uphold the federation’s values. The organisation noted its belief that the Ghanaian boxer would continue to represent the IBF with “honour, distinction and integrity” as his career progresses.

The commendation letter was signed by Carlos Ortiz Jr., Vice Chairman of the IBF Championships Committee, and copied to senior IBF officials including Daryl Peoples, George Martinez and Ben Keilty, highlighting the significance of Laryea’s accomplishment within the global boxing body.
