The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a nationwide deployment of franchise officers across all district operational areas from February 2026, in a bid to curb electricity theft, strengthen revenue assurance, and improve service reliability.
Under the initiative, franchise officers will support ECG’s field operations by reading postpaid meters, verifying the integrity of prepaid meters, distributing and printing postpaid bills on-site using handheld devices, and assisting customers to make payments through approved digital platforms such as the ECG Power App and short code *226#.
ECG General Manager for External Relations, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku, who disclosed this in a media interview, stressed that franchise officers are not permitted to accept cash payments under any circumstances.
According to him, the officers will also be tasked with disconnecting customers with arrears and identifying and reporting illegal electricity-related activities for further action.
Dr. Ayiku, said the programme forms part of a broader strategy to decentralise services, enhance accountability, and improve billing accuracy.
“The franchise officer initiative is designed to bring ECG services closer to our customers, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen engagement at the community level. By decentralising these functions, customers can receive timely and efficient support right at their doorsteps,” he explained.
Dr. Ayiku emphasised that the initiative would play a critical role in addressing power theft and other illegal practices that undermine the sustainability of electricity supply and system reliability.
He also urged customers to prioritise safety and transparency by verifying the identity of franchise officers before engaging with them.
According to him, all officers will carry official ECG identification cards and signed authorisation letters from their respective districts.
