Veteran musician Akosua Agyapong has accused the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) of operating without a valid licence while still collecting royalties on behalf of musicians across the country.
Speaking during an emotional TikTok Live session on February 1, 2026, the award-winning singer alleged that GHAMRO continues to collect and manage royalties despite, according to her, lacking the legal mandate to operate.
“GHAMRO, I salute you. Dead GHAMRO. Dead but walking,” she said in the video.
“They don’t have a licence, but they are still collecting our money. I’m really sad.”
Akosua Agyapong questioned why musicians continue to struggle financially while royalties generated from their creative work remain, in her words, poorly managed.
“It is our sweat. It is our money. Why do we have to sweat and suffer? Why should musicians die poor whilst money is with some people who are squandering it, building houses and buying big cars?” she asked.
She also paid tribute to late highlife legends Papa Yankson, Nana Ampedu, AB Crentsil, Daasebre Dwamena, and Dada KD, lamenting that many influential musicians passed away without enjoying the full benefits of their life’s work.
The veteran artiste further accused former and current GHAMRO executives of insulting her and avoiding meetings intended to address royalties she claims are owed her from past music projects.
Akosua Agyapong’s claim of unlicensed GHAMRO has come about a week after CEO of GHAMRO Jackson Brefo said that organisation’s license has not been revoked.
“It is a license that doesn’t have an expiring date. However, the law demands that at every point or every five years you submit several documents which is enshrined in the copyright regulation LI 1962 for the Attorney General’s validation, which the office as I speak now has done all. The AG has validated all these things and when the AG validates all these documents, it is required within 14 days to communicate its approval or disapproval to whatever you have submitted. As we speak the AG has not communicated its approval or disapproval of the operations of GHAMRO.” Jackson told Kwame Dadzie on Joyfm.
